Hair Q & A

Here are some questions we hear alot:

Pedicure Safety

While pedicures can be very relaxing and pampering, they can turn bad, and even deadly, if proper safety precautions are not taken. Here are some things to ask when booking your pedicure:

Disposable liners or piped basins?

Disposable water basins are plastic liners that fit in the base of the chair. Each client gets their own fresh water and it's thrown away at the end of the session. Piped water is recycled which provide prime area for bacteria growth. There is no possible way to get the pipe completely clean and this is cause for infections.

I really like the jets in a piped basin. Will I get this with a disposable liner?

While the jets can be very relaxing during a pedicure, they are also how bacteria is pushed back into your foot-bath. Disposable liners instead offer vibrations to soothe your feet.

I'm travelling and can't find a local salon that uses disposable liners. How do I stay safe?

Open cuts and sores are an easy way for bacteria to get into the body and cause infection. Do not get a pedicure if you have any cuts or sores on your feet or lower legs.

Don't shave your legs the day of or the day before your pedicure. Shaving allows hair follicles to be left open and you can nick yourself and not know it.

Ask if the salon is licensed. Both the salon and the professional must be licensed by the state.

Ask how much time is scheduled between clients. It takes at least 10 minutes for any disinfecting agent to work. But remember, even disinfecting cannot remove all the bacteria in a piped basin.

The disinfecting process also applies to tools that are used during the pedicure.
